Travel Is More Than a Destination

Travel and Adventure

Great travel experiences rarely happen by accident.

They come from thoughtful planning, local insight, and a clear understanding of what makes a journey meaningful for each traveler.

Through her work with Nesser Travel, luxury travel advisor Melanie Nesser helps clients move beyond generic itineraries to create experiences that feel personal, memorable, and truly special.

Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, a relaxing escape, or a carefully designed journey that blends culture, food, and exploration, the goal is always the same: helping travelers experience the world in a deeper way.

Because the best journeys aren’t just about where you go.

They’re about how the experience stays with you long after you return home.

To learn more about how she approaches travel design—and why meaningful travel still matters—we asked Melanie to share a little about her story, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and the experiences that continue to inspire her work.

The Beginning

What first sparked your love of travel?

It was a feeling I couldn’t ignore—the realization that the world is infinitely larger than the bubble we live in. My first major trip opened my eyes to how different cultures, flavors, and landscapes can shift our entire perspective. I realized then that travel isn’t just a luxury; it’s an education of the soul.

What inspired you to turn that passion into your own business?

I saw a gap between “booking a trip” and “crafting an authentic experience.” I wanted to help people move toward purposeful adventures. Launching Nesser Travel allowed me to combine my logistical precision with my love for discovery.

Travel planning is often seen as purely logistical, but Melanie approaches it differently—viewing each journey as something that should feel intentional and deeply personal.

The Heart of Her Work

What do you love most about helping people plan their travels?

The “magic moment” when a client realizes they don’t have to worry. I love taking the stress of the “how” off their shoulders so they can focus entirely on the “who” and the “where.”

How do you hope clients feel when they return?

I want them to feel “richer.” As I always say, travel is the one thing you spend money on that makes you richer. Invest in yourself. I hope they return feeling rejuvenated, more connected to their companions, and already dreaming of the next horizon.

Some destinations leave a lasting impression long after the trip ends. For Melanie, one country continues to stand out.

What keeps drawing you back to Spain?

Spain unexpectedly captured my heart. Recently, the Spain Tourism Board and the Ambassador of Spain and Ibiza hosted me in Seville and Ibiza, and the energy there is unmatched. It’s the late-night tapas and Flamenco, the scent of orange blossoms, and the way the Spanish prioritize joy and connection.

My favorite “hidden spot” has to be a tucked-away ocean-air beach club suggested by the tourism director of Ibiza. There’s something hypnotic about the DJ-spun sets and the way people connect through movement—no words needed, just the music, a shared nod, and the Mediterranean breeze.

Lessons From the Road

Can you share a travel experience that challenged or changed you?

Leading a large group to Japan—especially in 2024 when the flight was leaving on the same day as the CrowdStrike software meltdown across the entire travel industry. All flights were canceled, which created a huge mess across the world.

Leading that large-scale group through Japan tested every logistical skill I have and proved that with the right planning, even a massive group can have an intimate, life-changing experience.

What destination surprised you the most?

The Italian Alps were a revelation. Local guides are essential there—they don’t just show you the slopes; they immerse you in the culture. Skiing across the border into France for lunch is a memory I’ll never forget.

What’s one piece of advice you always give travelers?

First… take the trip. You will thank yourself later, and you are worth the investment.

For logistics, I always recommend travel insurance and ensuring your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return. Logistics aren’t glamorous, but they are the foundation of a stress-free trip.

Everyday Adventure

How do you keep that spirit of adventure in everyday life?

I treat my own city like a destination. I look for new restaurants, visit local landmarks I usually pass by, and try to view my daily routine through the lens of a visitor.

I’m also a voracious reader, so I find myself reading about new destinations almost every day.

Do you have any rituals that keep you grounded between trips?

I wake up every day with pure gratitude. This has been a habit for years and only gets stronger. To wake up and be genuinely thankful sets the tone for everything that day.

In the evening I enjoy reviewing photos from past trips. It reminds me of why I do what I do and keeps me connected to the global community—even when I am at home in Kirkwood.

Looking Ahead

Why do you think travel still matters today?

It matters. More so than ever before. In a digital world, we are more “connected” but more isolated than ever. Travel forces us to be present. You can’t scroll through the feeling of the wind on a Mediterranean cruise or the taste of a fresh croissant in Paris.

Be here now. Breathe into it.

What kinds of trips are you most excited about planning right now?

I’m currently deep into signature European itineraries and high-end cruises and river cruises. I have invested hundreds of hours earning my Masters certifications with various cruise lines to ensure I can match my clients with their perfect ship and voyage.

There is a huge appetite right now for “slow luxury”—taking the time to really move through a region rather than rushing.

Quick Travel Favorites

Window or aisle? Window (I never get tired of the view).

Mountains or ocean? Mountains for the spirit (I am a snow skier), ocean for the soul.

Early flight or late departure? Early flight—I want every possible minute in a new city.

Dream destination still on your list? A Galápagos expedition cruise.
