Tucked between the more well-known coastal towns of Cannon Beach and Tillamook, Rockaway Beach, Oregon, offers a quieter, more laid-back escape along the Pacific. With its seven miles of sandy shoreline, stunning ocean views, and unexpected hidden gems, it’s the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the salty air, and reconnect with nature.
For us, this Oregon Coast road trip was more than just another getaway—it was a celebration. After years of schooling, passing the boards, and hitting both of our birthdays (Tom’s on August 29 and mine on August 30), this trip felt like the perfect way to mark a new chapter.

That’s why we made sure to book our lodging ahead of time—and I wanted beachfront stays all the way down the coast. Rockaway Beach was one of those stops that didn’t seem like much at first but ended up surprising us in all the best ways.
Oceanfront Stay in Rockaway Beach: More Than We Expected

After spending the day at Cannon Beach, we were happy but exhausted and ready to unwind. As we pulled into our hotel in Rockaway Beach, I have to admit—it didn’t look like much from the outside. But once we stepped inside, it was perfect.
The room had everything we needed:
✔ Two bathrooms (a road trip luxury!)
✔ A full kitchen with everything we needed to cook dinner and breakfast (we brought the food)
✔ A fireplace for cozying up in the evening
✔ TV with streaming services
✔ A private deck with an ocean view
Between the two hotel buildings, there was a walkway leading down to the beach, which we wasted no time exploring. As we walked along the soft, cool sand, the Pacific waves rolled in, and we dipped our toes in the water, letting the moment sink in.

Even though Rockaway Beach felt quieter than Cannon Beach, we weren’t alone. A woman stood near the shore, throwing a ball into the waves for her dog, who bounded after it without hesitation, splashing through the shallows with pure joy. Further down the beach, a group of friends stood in a loose circle, laughing as they took turns drawing patterns in the wet sand. Couples walked hand in hand, some carrying their shoes, letting the cold saltwater rush over their feet.

As the sun dipped lower, we watched the sunset from our deck, soaking in the glowing sky and the sound of the waves. And, in true coastal fashion, we had a close encounter with a bold little seagull who clearly thought we owed him a snack.

It was the perfectly simple, peaceful end to the day—exactly what we needed.

The Next Morning: Rockaway Big Tree Trail
Before hitting the road again, we wanted to explore one of Rockaway Beach’s lesser-known gems—the Rockaway Big Tree Trail.

A Walk Among Giants
This 1.2-mile boardwalk trail winds through a lush, old-growth forest, leading to one of the largest and oldest trees on the Oregon Coast—a Western Red Cedar standing 154 feet tall with a 50-foot circumference. Some estimates say it could be anywhere from 500 to 900 years old.

The moment we stepped onto the wooden boardwalk, it felt like we had entered another world. The air was cool, damp, and rich with the scent of cedar and earth. Everything was covered in vibrant green moss, and the sounds of birds and rustling leaves surrounded us.
The trail itself was easy and relaxing, with benches along the way where you could sit and soak in the surroundings. Even though it was a short walk, it was the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, breathe deep, and just be present.

When we finally reached the Big Tree, it was impossible not to be impressed. Its massive, gnarled roots and thick, weathered bark told the story of centuries of storms, changing landscapes, and quiet resilience. Standing beneath it, you can’t help but feel small in the best way possible.

Accessibility & Trail Info
One of the best things about this trail? It’s fully accessible.
- The entire trail is a well-maintained boardwalk, making it easy for strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who prefers a flat, smooth path.
- There are benches along the way, perfect for resting or simply taking in the view.
- The parking area is small but free, and there’s a portable restroom at the trailhead.
If you want a peaceful, easy nature walk that still feels like a hidden adventure, Rockaway Big Tree Trail is absolutely worth a stop.

Final Thoughts: Why Rockaway Beach is Worth Visiting
Rockaway Beach is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It’s not as busy as Cannon Beach, and it doesn’t have the big-name attractions of other Oregon Coast towns, but that’s what makes it special. It’s the perfect mix of ocean, quiet charm, and unexpected surprises—like stumbling across an ancient tree in the middle of a coastal rainforest.

For us, this stop was about taking a breath, enjoying the ocean, and starting the day with a moment of stillness before heading back out on the road. And in that way, it was absolutely perfect.
