If you love cheese, ice cream, and road trip-worthy food experiences, the Tillamook Cheese Factory in Tillamook, Oregon, belongs on your itinerary. Nestled between rolling farmland and the rugged coastline, this stop isn’t just about grabbing a bite—it’s an immersive cheese lover’s dream.
At Tillamook, you can peek behind the curtain of one of the most famous cheese brands in the country. You get to watch the cheese-making process in action, sample fresh curds, and—most importantly—devour a waffle cone piled high with their legendary ice cream. Whether you’re a foodie, a curious traveler, or just looking for a fun break on your coastal road trip, Tillamook delivers.
A Taste of History: The Tillamook Story

Tillamook isn’t just a brand—it’s part of Oregon’s heritage. This farmer-owned dairy co-op has been producing cheese since 1909, and today, more than 80 small, family-run dairy farms make up the Tillamook County Creamery Association. These families have been raising cows for generations, and their commitment to high-quality dairy is exactly what makes Tillamook cheese, butter, and ice cream so ridiculously good.
The best part? When you visit, you’re not just getting a cheese-filled experience—you’re supporting local Oregon farmers who are keeping this tradition alive.
Behind the Scenes: The Tillamook Factory Experience

The self-guided tour gives you a front-row seat to the cheese-making process. Large viewing windows overlook the factory floor, where you can watch fresh milk turn into golden wheels of cheese right in front of you.
Watch the process unfold—workers inspecting giant blocks of cheddar, conveyor belts carrying wheels of cheese through the aging rooms, and, of course, the mesmerizing rhythm of cheese curds tumbling into molds. If you’re there on a weekday, you’ll get to see the factory in full production mode (weekends tend to be quieter).

If you want to learn more, interactive displays throughout the visitor center share the history of Oregon’s dairy industry, fun facts about cheesemaking, and stories from local farmers. Even if you know nothing about dairy, it’s fascinating to see how much care goes into every block of cheese.
The entire visitor center is wheelchair-accessible, with ramps, wide walkways, and an elevator to the viewing area.
Cheese Sampling: Straight to the Good Stuff

Walking into the Tillamook Cheese Factory, the first thing you notice is the smell—rich, buttery, and undeniably cheesy. We didn’t take the tour, but honestly, we didn’t feel like we missed out.
Instead, we headed straight for the cheese tasting station, where we got to sample:
- Tillamook Vintage White Cheddar – Aged for two years, super sharp, and dangerously snackable.
- Smoked Black Pepper White Cheddar – A little smoky, a little spicy, and totally unique.
- Squeaky Cheese Curds – Fresh, mild, and so good we grabbed a bag for the road.
There were so many varieties to choose from, and if you find a favorite, you can grab full-size blocks at the Tillamook Market.
Tillamook Ice Cream: A Sweet Treat You Can’t Miss

Of course, we couldn’t leave without getting Tillamook ice cream. After all, what’s a visit to a dairy co-op without a scoop (or two)? Their ice cream is extra creamy, rich, and packed with flavor—the kind that makes you pause after the first bite because wow.
Choosing a flavor was tough, but we landed on Salted Caramel Toffee and Marionberry Pie—and both were absolute perfection.
- Salted Caramel Toffee had the perfect balance of sweet and salty, with crunchy bits of toffee in every bite.
- Marionberry Pie tasted like a slice of Oregon in a cone—creamy vanilla ice cream swirled with tangy marionberries and chunks of buttery pie crust.
Worth every single calorie.
The line for ice cream can get crazy long in summer, but if you’re short on time, grab a pre-packed pint from the freezer section and enjoy it on the road.
Beyond Cheese & Ice Cream: More to Explore
Even though we were all about the food, there’s plenty more to do at Tillamook if you want to make the most of your visit.
Shop at the Tillamook Market

The market is cheese-lover heaven—packed with:
- Every variety of Tillamook cheese imaginable
- Locally made jams, chocolates, and snacks
- Fun Tillamook-branded souvenirs (yes, they sell cow plushies)
We grabbed a couple of extra cheese blocks and resisted (only barely) the urge to buy an entire wheel of cheddar.
Grab a Bite at the Food Hall

If you’re in the mood for something more than samples, the Tillamook Food Hall serves up:
- Gooey, melty grilled cheese sandwiches
- Mac and cheese that’ll ruin all other mac and cheeses for you
- Creamy tomato soup (perfect for dipping your grilled cheese)
We didn’t eat here this time (because cheese samples + ice cream were plenty), but if you need a full meal, this is the place to do it.
Is Tillamook Worth the Stop? Absolutely.

This place is touristy, yes, but if you love cheese, ice cream, and supporting small farms, it’s 100% worth it. You don’t have to take the tour to have a great time—just come hungry and enjoy the best dairy products Oregon has to offer.
It’s also right off Highway 101, making it an easy and delicious stop on your way down the coast.
