For the last three spring breaks, we’ve packed up the car and hit the road for an Alabama family road trip—finding sunshine, sweet surprises, and little pockets of magic in Trussville and Birmingham. This has become more than just a tradition for us; it’s something we look forward to all year long.

Each visit has offered its own kind of wonder—cozy places to stay, amazing local food, and memory-making adventures with our grandkids. Whether you’re planning your own spring break getaway or looking for your next long weekend escape, here’s everything we loved and what we’d absolutely do again.
Where to Stay on Your Alabama Family Road Trip

Over the past three years, we’ve tried VRBO and a hotel stay—and each had its own charm.
- Year 1 & 3: We stayed in VRBOs tucked into quiet neighborhoods with porches, cozy living rooms, and space to cook simple breakfasts or unwind after long days of exploring. We always felt more grounded and relaxed with that home-away-from-home feel. We even found one right next to the Gateway in Trussville this time, which was amazing.
- Year 2: We gave the Hilton Garden Inn a try, and it was clean, welcoming, and perfectly located for downtown exploring. While we loved the convenience and service, we realized we prefer the personal feel of an Airbnb—so we happily switched back the following year.
Wonder-Filled Family Adventures in Trussville & Birmingham
These towns offer some truly memorable spots for kids and adults alike. Here are a few of our top picks:
McWane Science Center – Birmingham

If there’s one stop that truly captures the magic of learning through play, it’s the McWane Science Center. Located in the heart of downtown Birmingham, this four-story science museum is packed with interactive exhibits, colorful displays, and hands-on experiences that spark curiosity at every turn.
From the moment we walked in, the energy was electric. Our grandkids were practically vibrating with excitement—racing from exhibit to exhibit, pressing buttons, building structures, and testing out science concepts without even realizing they were learning. And we weren’t just spectators—we were right there with them, laughing and discovering alongside them.
Some of the highlights:
- The Itty Bitty Magic City, a miniature world for younger kids with a grocery store, fire station, and water play area—it’s like stepping into their imaginations.
- The Shark & Ray Touch Tank, where we all gently touched a passing stingray and watched small sharks glide through the water—an unforgettable sensory moment.
- Science on a Sphere, a glowing, rotating globe that brought weather systems and planetary movements to life in a way we’d never seen before.
- The High Cycle—a bicycle suspended high above the museum floor. It looks terrifying and awesome at the same time (no, we didn’t try it, but we might next time).
- The Alabama Dinosaurs Exhibit—this one was a personal favorite. As someone who works in X-ray and loves all things bones and skeletons, I was completely drawn in. These aren’t just models—they’re actual fossils found right here in Alabama. The Appalachiosaurus, a relative of the T. rex, and the Nodosaur, with its incredible armor-like structure, were awe-inspiring to see up close. There’s something fascinating about seeing ancient skeletons that have been hidden for millions of years finally on display.
And when it was time for a break, the IMAX Theater gave us a chance to rest our feet while being completely immersed in larger-than-life documentaries that made us feel like we were swimming with whales or soaring through space.
There’s something here for everyone—from toddlers to teens to curious adults—and we easily spent half a day here without anyone getting bored. It’s one of those rare places where education and entertainment blend so seamlessly, it doesn’t feel like learning at all.
For us, the McWane Center isn’t just a museum—it’s a place that brings out the wonder in all of us.
Birmingham Zoo – A Relaxed, Kid-Friendly Zoo (With a Few Cool Surprises)
The Birmingham Zoo is a nice family-friendly stop if you’re looking for something outdoors and easy to explore. It’s clean, well-maintained, and just the right size for a half-day visit—especially with kids in tow.
We spent a couple of hours walking the shaded paths, checking out the exhibits, and enjoying the slower pace. Compared to larger zoos, it’s definitely manageable, and there were a few standout moments that made the visit worthwhile.
Some of our highlights:
- Cheetahs and Orangutans – Both were fascinating to watch. The cheetahs were sleek and alert, and the orangutans were especially engaging. It was one of those times where everyone—kids and adults—just stood still, completely absorbed.
- Red Pandas – These little guys were a surprise favorite! Adorably fluffy and fun to watch as they climbed and napped—they were a hit with all of us.
- Trails of Africa – The African elephants were impressive, and this area is thoughtfully designed to give them room to move and socialize.
- Giraffe Feeding – You can purchase feed and get right up close to the giraffes, which was definitely a hit with the kids (and honestly, pretty cool for us too).
- Flamingo Lagoon – A peaceful little area with bright pink flamingos and black-necked swans. It made for a nice photo stop and a quiet moment in the middle of the visit.
- Children’s Zoo Area – A good spot for younger kids to interact with animals and explore a more hands-on space, including a black bear trail and barnyard area.
They also offer a train ride and a carousel, which we didn’t do this time, but they’re fun options if you have smaller kids or want to take a break mid-visit.
Parking is free, which was a nice surprise. They also have a train ride and a carousel, which we didn’t do this time, but they’re nice options if you’re visiting with smaller kids or need a midday break.
Parking is free, which was a nice surprise. That said, admission prices are on the higher side—especially if you’re used to something like the St. Louis Zoo, where admission is free and the exhibits are extensive. For us, it was a good outing and something we’d consider doing again, especially with grandkids along. It’s not an all-day event, but it’s a laid-back, well-kept zoo with some memorable highlights.
Urban Air Trussville – High-Energy Fun for the Whole Family

During our time in Trussville, Urban Air Adventure Park quickly became a go-to spot for high-energy fun. It’s an indoor adventure park packed with activities that kept the grandkids entertained, challenged, and completely worn out by the end of it—which, let’s be honest, is the dream.
The space is huge, clean, and well-organized with different zones for various age levels and comfort zones. Whether your kids are climbers, jumpers, or just need a place to burn off energy, there’s something here for everyone.
Attractions include:
- Wall-to-wall trampolines for jumping, flipping, and freestyle fun
- Climbing walls of all types and difficulty levels
- A Warrior Obstacle Course that had our older grandkids channeling their inner ninja
- A large Tubes Indoor Playground—perfect for the little ones to crawl, slide, and explore
- Plus areas for dodgeball, slam dunk zones, and other challenge-based games
It was loud, busy, and a bit chaotic—but in the best possible way. The kids were completely engaged, and we got to take a breather and enjoy watching them run wild in a safe, enclosed space.
They also offer memberships and day passes depending on what works best for your visit. It’s definitely on the pricier side, especially if you have multiple kids and want full access to all the activities, but for a solid block of fun (and a good night’s sleep after), it was worth it.
We’d definitely go again—and next time, we might even try the adult obstacle course ourselves. Maybe.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens – Peaceful, Free, and Full of Beauty

We didn’t make it to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens this trip, but we’ve been before—and it’s absolutely worth a stop if you’re in the area and want something peaceful and free to explore.
The gardens are right near the city and completely free to enter, which is always a win. Parking is easy, and it’s a great place to slow down and spend some time outside. It’s not overly flashy, but that’s kind of what makes it special—it’s just beautiful, quiet, and low-key.
When we visited previously, some of our favorite areas were:
- The Japanese Garden – One of the most peaceful spots we’ve ever walked through, with a koi pond, bamboo grove, and a traditional tea house that gives it a transport-you-somewhere-else feel.
- The Rose Garden – A lovely place to walk through when things are blooming. There’s a fountain in the middle, and the whole area just feels calm and well cared for.
- Shaded Trails and Native Plants – The fern and wildflower sections were especially nice on a warm day—cool, green, and a little tucked away from everything else.
- The Conservatory – Not huge, but it was fun to walk through and see the tropical and desert plants all in one spot.
There’s also a little gift shop and a café if you want to take a break or grab a bite. It’s a great place for a stroll, especially if you’re looking for something slower-paced in between more active or kid-focused outings.
If you haven’t been before, I’d definitely recommend carving out an hour or two for it on a future visit. We’ve always come away feeling relaxed and refreshed.
Where to Eat in Trussville – Local Favorites, Family Spaces & Sweet Treats
Trussville has become one of our favorite spots to eat out as a family, especially with the addition of The Gateway Entertainment District in the heart of downtown. It’s not just about the food (though there’s plenty of good food!)—it’s the setup that makes it shine.

The Gateway includes a variety of restaurants with a covered outdoor seating area, picnic tables, and a large turf area where kids can safely run and play. There’s a big screen that often shows sports or family-friendly content, which keeps everyone entertained while you enjoy your meal. It’s the kind of place that makes it easy to relax, especially if you have little ones who don’t love sitting still for long.
Some of our favorite spots at The Gateway and around Trussville include:
- Metro Diner – Great for hearty breakfasts or comfort food-style lunches. The chicken and waffles are a favorite, and the portions are always generous.
- Mr. West’s Asian Kitchen – We’ve eaten here more than once and love the cozy vibe and fresh, flavorful meals. Everything from stir-fry to sushi hits the spot.
- Habanero’s Mexican Grill – A fun and casual spot with consistently good food and a lively atmosphere.
- Cookie Dough Magic – A must-do treat spot, especially if you have kids in tow. You can get edible cookie dough in all sorts of fun flavors, or grab a scoop of ice cream.
- Pinchgut Pies – A local favorite for handcrafted pizza right in the heart of the entertainment district.
- Rodney Scott’s BBQ – If you’re in the mood for barbecue, this spot is a great option. The pulled pork and sides were flavorful, and it’s right in the heart of The Gateway.
- Edgar’s Bakery – A charming spot perfect for brunch or a lighter breakfast. Their pastries are beautiful and delicious, and it’s a great place to sit down and catch up over coffee.
There are more places popping up all the time, and honestly, Trussville has done a great job of creating a welcoming space that works for both adults and kids. It’s walkable, friendly, and easy to spend a few hours just enjoying good food and community.
Uptown Birmingham – Great Food, Easy Vibes & Something for Everyone

If you’re looking for a nice evening out in Birmingham, Uptown is a great little pocket of the city to explore. It’s right near the BJCC and has a handful of restaurants all within walking distance of each other. We stopped by after a long day and really enjoyed the laid-back vibe and open-air feel of the district.
There’s a little bit of everything food-wise, so whether you’re with kids or just looking for a relaxed meal, it’s a solid option. Some of the standouts:
- The Southern Kitchen & Bar – We love a good Southern meal, and this place delivered. The setting was really nice, and they’ve got a rooftop terrace that’s perfect when the weather’s nice.
- Uptown Cantina – If you’re craving Mexican food with a bit of flair, this spot has a fun atmosphere and fresh ingredients.
- Mugshots Grill & Bar – A great family-friendly burger spot. The menu has plenty of variety, and it’s casual enough to bring kids without stress.
- Eugene’s Hot Chicken – If you like a little heat, this one’s for you. The Nashville-style hot chicken comes in different spice levels, and the sides are just as good.
- Texas de Brazil – A more upscale option if you’re in the mood to splurge. It’s an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse, and everything is carved right at the table. Definitely not an everyday place, but a fun treat if you’re celebrating or just extra hungry.
What we liked most about Uptown is that it’s clean, walkable, and has plenty of seating and space to move around. It’s a good stop if you’re coming from an event or just want a casual night out with good food options. We didn’t feel rushed, and it was nice to end the day with a relaxed dinner and some people-watching.
